HSES Top 5 Accomplishments
TREX - Plastic Film Recycling ChallengeIn 2016, HSES students were challenged to recycle plastic film and bags. 1,971 total pounds of plastic, approximately 2.6 pounds of plastic per student were collected! The initial goal of the program was to collect 500 pounds. HSES came in FIRST place in the state of Maryland and the students earned a TREX bench made out of recycled plastic. It is now used as a BUDDY bench at recess!

PD - Port Isobel Staff TripThanks to a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust a cross-section of staff from HSES embarked on a two day, one night journey to Port Isobel Island to learn about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and what it takes to be a Green School!

HSES - Earth Friendly WednesdaysWednesdays have become Earth Friendly at HSES where the focus is walking to school, packing a WASTE -FREE lunch, and collecting mixed recycling from the blue recycling bins. It has become common place and part of the routine for the entire community! Reducing our carbon footprint and erasing our waste fuel our GREEN initiatives!

Reduce Chesapeake 2015 CompetitionStudents Unlock the Power of Building Data to Reduce Electricity Consumption by 10.8% during Three-Week Competition between K-12 schools in the Chesapeake region. HSES saved a total of 18,608 kilowatt-hours, resulting in approximately $1,871 dollars of savings and a 23,566 pound reduction in CO2 emissions in just three weeks.
In addition to achieving these impressive savings, the competition provided valuable educational opportunities enabling, for instance, teachers and students to understand how their actions impact their school’s electricity consumption, and to discover firsthand how small changes to daily routines can reduce energy waste. Grade 5 Tree PlantingFrom community partnerships and grants, the 5th graders at HSES participated in planting 150 trees in the fall of 2016 on the school grounds. It was a monumental task that involved students, teachers, parents, and the community all working toward to improve the habitat for wildlife and reduce runoff at HSES! Native Trees planted included: Red Maple, Chestnut Oak, Serviceberry, Black Gum, and Redbud.
